ASP 81: What Are Your Self-Publishing Goals for 2017?

“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.”

— Stephen A. Brennan

Steve and Barrie discuss their self-publishing goals for 2017 and how other self-published authors can use SMART goal setting to accomplish more in the coming year.

“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” — Stephen A. Brennan

SMART Goal Setting

S: Specific goals answer your six “W” questions: who, what, where, when, which and why.

  • Who: Who is involved?
  • What: What do you want to accomplish?
  • Where: Where will you complete the goal?
  • When: When do you want to do it?
  • Which: Which requirements and constraints might get in your way?
  • Why: Why are you doing it?

M: Measurable goals are defined with precise times, amounts, or other units—essentially anything that measures progress toward a goal.

A: Attainable goals are not impossible to complete, they’re often challenging and full of obstacles. The key to creating an attainable goal is to look at your current life and set an objective that seems slightly beyond your reach. That way, even if you fail, you still accomplish something of significance.

R: Relevant goals focus on what you truly desire. They are the exact opposite of inconsistent or scattered goals. They are in harmony with everything that is important in your life, from success in your career to happiness with the people you love.

T: Time-bound goals have specific deadlines. You are expected to achieve your desired outcome before a target date. Time-bound goals are challenging and grounding. You can set your target date for today, or you can set it for a few months, a few weeks or a few years from now. The key to creating a time-bound goal is to set a deadline you’ll meet by working backward and developing habits (more on this later).

  1. Dear Barrie and Steve,
    Thanks for your podcast show.
Enjoy listening and learning but also nice to get to know you both better.
    Lovely to read your goals.
It’s good to write them down and putting it out, it helps staying committed.

You asked to share our goals, and one of mine, includes you:
    – Write and self-publish my next book in 2017: Moving abroad: the good, the bad & everything else.
    – Relaunch and create an audiobook from ‘Awaken Your Confidence’ (my book including Steve
    Scott’s chapter )
    – Increase Speaking events regarding Awaken Confidence
    – Workshops to awaken Confidence
    – Here’s my favorite:
Speak on Steve or Barrie’s podcast, to inspire the listeners about the skill of self-confidence, but also being a self-publishing author from Europe, I would like to add my journey as non-US and non-UK author.

    Thanks for reading,
    Rachel

  2. This was the episode I needed to listen to for the end of 2016; great tips for setting up goals. Honestly, setting goals has always been easy for me…following through with them is where I’ve failed, mostly because, as Steve mentioned, they were so BIG that I would drown in overwhelmness and then just drift through the year doing what I could without a real plan. But this month I set out to make them more ‘realistic’ so, instead of saying I’ll increase subscribers to 10k by the end of December, focus instead on the smaller details like creating a powerful LM to attract new subscribers. I like the idea of doing goals in just short increments from 30-100 days. Happy holidays!

    • I LOVE the 1 to 3 month sprint type goals. It’s really changed around how I get things done. It’s good to see you’re making the switch to outcomes you CAN control (like improving the lead magnet.)

  3. Hi Barrie, Steve and Ron,

    You guys are phenomenal!

For me this is perfect timing to remind me to reflect on what I have accomplished in 2016 and set my goals for the new year.

One of my new sticky habit is to write in my new cool colorful hard bound journal book everyday.

I loved your podcast and article and I just finish writing my 2017 goals which I will share per your link below.

I thank all of you and everyone that’s part of APA for all the guidance and support and cheerleading.

Happy holidays to everyone and a very healthy and successful 2017 and beyond for all of us authorpreneurs!

    Thank you!
    Amelia
